ST-40 Fenglong
ST-40 Fenglong (豐隆) is a point on the Stomach meridian. In TCM theory it is described as influencing the channel's qi, and it is traditionally used in the context of the whole pattern rather than as a stand-alone remedy. This page explains how to locate it, what the tradition says about it, and how to press it safely.
Location
Eight cun above the lateral malleolus, two finger-breadths lateral to the anterior crest of the tibia.
How to find it
Measure midway between the knee and ankle on the outer shin, about two finger-widths outside the shin bone.
Traditional functions
- Transforms phlegm and dampness
- Harmonizes the stomach
- Calms the spirit
Traditional uses
- Phlegm-damp patterns: heaviness, chest congestion, and foggy thinking
- Dizziness
- Digestive sluggishness
- Cough with phlegm
How to press it
Press firmly for 1–2 minutes on each leg, using slow circles if the muscle is tight.
Acupressure is generally a gentle practice. Use the pad of the thumb or finger, start with light pressure, and increase only to a comfortable level. A mild ache or warmth is common; sharp pain is a signal to ease off.
Safety
Avoid pressing over varicose veins or an inflamed lower leg. Calf swelling or pain needs medical evaluation.
How this is viewed today
ST-40 is frequently used in acupuncture for phlegm-related and digestive patterns. Evidence remains limited.
