ST-36 Zusanli
ST-36 Zusanli (足三里) is a point on the Stomach meridian. In TCM theory it is described as influencing the channel's qi, and it is traditionally used in the context of the whole pattern rather than as a stand-alone remedy. This page explains how to locate it, what the tradition says about it, and how to press it safely.
Location
Three cun below ST-35, one finger-breadth lateral to the anterior crest of the tibia.
How to find it
Sit with the knee bent. Place the palm on the kneecap, fingers pointing down; the point is roughly where the little finger lands, one finger-width outside the shin bone.
Traditional functions
- He-sea point of the Stomach meridian
- Tonifies qi and blood; harmonizes the stomach and spleen
- Traditionally regarded as a point of general vitality
Traditional uses
- Fatigue and low stamina in the traditional framework
- Poor appetite, bloating, and digestive weakness
- Knee and lower-leg discomfort
- General support during recovery
How to press it
Press with the thumb for 1–2 minutes on each leg, or use a slow circular massage. A dull ache is expected.
Acupressure is generally a gentle practice. Use the pad of the thumb or finger, start with light pressure, and increase only to a comfortable level. A mild ache or warmth is common; sharp pain is a signal to ease off.
Safety
Avoid pressing directly on varicose veins, an inflamed knee, or broken skin. Persistent digestive symptoms need medical evaluation.
How this is viewed today
ST-36 is one of the most frequently studied points, with research on digestion, immunity, fatigue, and postoperative recovery. Reviews report preliminary or mixed findings.
