ST-25 Tianshu
ST-25 Tianshu (天樞) is a point on the Stomach meridian. In TCM theory it is described as influencing the channel's qi, and it is traditionally used in the context of the whole pattern rather than as a stand-alone remedy. This page explains how to locate it, what the tradition says about it, and how to press it safely.
Location
Two cun lateral to the umbilicus, on the abdomen.
How to find it
Measure three finger-widths to either side of the navel. The point lies in the soft tissue at that level.
Traditional functions
- Front-mu point of the Large Intestine
- Regulates the intestines and moves stagnation
- Harmonizes the middle burner
Traditional uses
- Abdominal bloating and discomfort
- Constipation or loose stools in the traditional description
- Digestive sluggishness
- Menstrual discomfort in some traditions
How to press it
Lie down and use gentle clockwise circles with the fingertips for 1–2 minutes. Keep the pressure light.
Acupressure is generally a gentle practice. Use the pad of the thumb or finger, start with light pressure, and increase only to a comfortable level. A mild ache or warmth is common; sharp pain is a signal to ease off.
Safety
Do not press during pregnancy, after recent abdominal surgery, or over an acute abdomen. Severe or sudden abdominal pain requires urgent medical care.
How this is viewed today
ST-25 is used in acupuncture research on constipation and postoperative bowel recovery. Evidence is limited, and abdominal needling should only be performed by a qualified practitioner.
