SP-4 Gongsun
SP-4 Gongsun (公孫) is a point on the Spleen meridian. In TCM theory it is described as influencing the channel's qi, and it is traditionally used in the context of the whole pattern rather than as a stand-alone remedy. This page explains how to locate it, what the tradition says about it, and how to press it safely.
Location
On the medial foot, in the depression distal and inferior to the base of the first metatarsal.
How to find it
Follow the inner edge of the foot to the base of the big-toe metatarsal; the point is in the hollow just in front of and below that base.
Traditional functions
- Luo-connecting point of the Spleen meridian
- Confluent point of the Penetrating Vessel
- Harmonizes the middle burner
Traditional uses
- Abdominal bloating and discomfort
- Constipation or diarrhea in the traditional description
- Menstrual discomfort
- Digestive upset with anxiety
How to press it
Press for 1–2 minutes per foot. It pairs traditionally with PC-6 on the opposite side.
Acupressure is generally a gentle practice. Use the pad of the thumb or finger, start with light pressure, and increase only to a comfortable level. A mild ache or warmth is common; sharp pain is a signal to ease off.
Safety
Use gentle pressure during pregnancy. Avoid over broken skin or an injured foot.
How this is viewed today
SP-4 is often studied with PC-6 for digestive symptoms. Evidence is limited and preliminary.
