LI-10 Shousanli
LI-10 Shousanli (手三里) is a point on the Large Intestine meridian. In TCM theory it is described as influencing the channel's qi, and it is traditionally used in the context of the whole pattern rather than as a stand-alone remedy. This page explains how to locate it, what the tradition says about it, and how to press it safely.
Location
Two cun below LI-11, on the line from LI-11 to LI-5, on the dorsal radial forearm.
How to find it
Bend the elbow. Find LI-11 at the outer end of the crease, then measure two finger-widths down the forearm.
Traditional functions
- Benefits the arm and shoulder
- Harmonizes the intestines
- Moves qi in the channel
Traditional uses
- Elbow and forearm pain
- Shoulder tension
- Digestive discomfort in traditional practice
- Fatigue in the arm
How to press it
Press for 1 minute while gently moving the forearm, then repeat on the other side.
Acupressure is generally a gentle practice. Use the pad of the thumb or finger, start with light pressure, and increase only to a comfortable level. A mild ache or warmth is common; sharp pain is a signal to ease off.
Safety
Avoid strong pressure on an inflamed elbow or over a recent injury.
How this is viewed today
LI-10 is commonly used in acupuncture for elbow and shoulder pain. Reviews report limited evidence.
