BL-10 Tianzhu
BL-10 Tianzhu (天柱) is a point on the Bladder meridian. In TCM theory it is described as influencing the channel's qi, and it is traditionally used in the context of the whole pattern rather than as a stand-alone remedy. This page explains how to locate it, what the tradition says about it, and how to press it safely.
Location
One and a half cun lateral to the midline, below the occiput, in the depression at the lateral border of the trapezius.
How to find it
Find the base of the skull. The point is in the hollow just outside the midline, beside the thick neck muscle.
Traditional functions
- Clears wind from the head
- Benefits the eyes and nose
- Relaxes the neck
Traditional uses
- Headache
- Neck stiffness
- Eye strain
- Nasal congestion
How to press it
Press upward toward the skull with the thumbs for 1 minute, breathing slowly.
Acupressure is generally a gentle practice. Use the pad of the thumb or finger, start with light pressure, and increase only to a comfortable level. A mild ache or warmth is common; sharp pain is a signal to ease off.
Safety
The vertebral artery is nearby. Use gentle pressure and avoid this area with a neck injury or dizziness on turning the head.
How this is viewed today
BL-10 is used in trials for neck pain and headache. Evidence is limited and short-term.
